For example, the characters speak in an accent that lies somewhere between Elmer Fudd and Forrest Gump whilst Kitai sounds like he has rubber bands around his tongue (mentioned in JoBlo's video).

Weird sounding stereotypical futuristic accents. The Ursas look like rejected Starship Troopers bugs. The special effects are poorly done, especially with the Ursa, the tiger, and the eagle.Very poor acting, especially considering who is involved.Kitai spends most of the movie being a whiny teenage brat and making terrible decisions, while Cypher is an extreme jackass and a terrible father since his treatment of Kitai is borderline emotional abuse, such the infamous dinner table scene where Cypher yells at Kitai with no provocation, ordering him to sit down, when all Kitai did was ask if he could go to his room. Both Kitai and Cypher Raige are completely unlikable characters. The character names try to sound futuristic, but just sound ridiculous, especially with Cypher Raige sounding arguably the most unconvincing. The biggest example is Kitai's sudden out-of-nowhere rant after Cypher tells him to abort the mission. The story is nearly bizarre, poorly written, poorly directed, and very dull. The main problem for this movie is that the story is clearly and obviously a massive ego trip fanfic for Will Smith and made by him too, filled with long speeches about how awesome his fanfiction-level self-insert character (Cypher Raige) is.Later, he finds the beacon and sends out the signal for help. Kitai goes out on his own to find the beacon and encounters a bird and a tiger while out on his rescue mission. Cypher also tells Kitai about the Ursa, which are creatures that can "smell fear" and tells Kitai to go find the beacon that was lost in the crash. Original article on Commander Cypher Raige (Will Smith) and his son Kitai (Jaden Smith) have to battle the elements of a post-apocalyptic Earth after surviving a spaceship crash. Still, it's a useful invention most current humans wouldn't turn down.Įditor's Note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly named the new human planet Alpha Prime. When it's cold, the suit turns blue and tan, but it doesn't seem to provide any added warmth. When it senses that danger is approaching, his clothing turns black and armor-like. While running around Earth, Kitai's suit changes depending on his environment. Our clothes are much cooler in the future. Kitai needs to overcome his fear to hopefully survive and defeat the alien horror.

The monster miraculously survives the accident, can breathe the air on Earth and is prowling the crash site looking for human prey.

The spaceship that crash-landed on Earth was also carrying an Ursa along with its other human cargo. "After Earth" stars Will and Jaden Smith pose for a photo at New Mexico's Spaceport America during the press junket for their science fiction film on May 17, 2013. At one point a parasite poisons the young man, and a group of angry baboon-like mammals chase him through a jungle.Īlthough humans have been off Earth for 1,000 years, it still doesn't seem to like us very much. The Earth began remaking itself into a hostile place for humans to live while still leaving all other oxygen-breathing animals unscathed.Īs Kitai runs to find help on the now pristine surface of Earth, he has to take doses of an inhaler that allows him to breathe the air on the forbidden planet. The propulsion system used in the movie is not explained, but it's definitely far beyond anything we have at our disposal today.Īt a certain point in the history presented by "After Earth," humans were forced to leave the planet because it basically kicked us out. When Kitai and his dad Cypher crash-landed on Earth, they were heading to a different planet, far from Nova Prime and Earth. People have created advanced, manta ray-shaped spaceships that are able to traverse interstellar distances. In the movie, humans have deserted Earth to live on the planet Nova Prime, a world seemingly within our galaxy but outside of the solar system.
